I’ve loved Grey’s Anatomy for 3 years now. I’d seen an episode here or there since it first came out, but I didn’t start to really watch it from beginning onwards till 2011. I marathon-watched all the seasons already released and then continued to watch current seasons as the episodes came out, getting them however I could. I have cried buckets of tears over the characters. I have been drowned by the feels. I have been angry when characters have been assholes, but forgiven them later. Usually. I got my mom hooked on the show this summer and she adores it; we drink wine and watch it together. I think it reminds her of happy memories of her sister, who was a doctor, and in some way watching Grey’s Anatomy with mom is like spending quality time with both her and my aunt.
So I was looking forward to this latest season. I was looking forward to as many more seasons as they wanted to give me.

I then heard the news that Sandra Oh is leaving the show, before I heard the show was ending. I knew the show HAD to end. You can’t have Grey’s Anatomy without Cristina Yang. The entire series is based off the friendship between Meredith and Cristina. It’s the core of the show.
So far I don’t think there’s been any official confirmation that the show is ending with Season 10 — just rumours borne of the main cast contracts ending at the end of this season. Sandra Oh isn’t renewing her contract. She’ll be gone at the end of Season 10 regardless of actual series end. Which means the show will basically be over, at least for me.
Before this season started I wondered how they were going to get rid of Cristina, as they’d been fairly clear that they wanted to give her a happy ending — no standard Seattle Grace Mercy DEATH ending for a cast member, no. They want Cristina to live.
As soon as the season started, it became obvious how they were going to get rid of her. They’re going to destroy the friendship between her and Meredith.
Meredith has become insufferable this season. It’s as if she’s had a complete personality transplant; it’s as if she’s forgotten who Cristina is. She’s punishing Cristina for being herself, and Cristina is letting her do it.
In this latest episode, Meredith goes on a TIRADE against Cristina. Several times. Finally, Shane — a resident — snaps at her and tells her that she’s out of line. Meredith makes snotty comments about how Cristina has trained him well with hero worship. Cristina takes this almost silently; when she does speak up, she only tries to smooth things over with Meredith.
A few minutes later, Meredith complains to Derek about her best friend being a “mean girl” and how she didn’t mind when Cristina was being mean to other people but now she’s being mean to her.
Are the writers drunk? Can they just not figure out how to send Cristina off without ruining the foundational relationship of the show or turning Meredith into a complete ass that I find myself wishing had died one of the several times she ALMOST did but didn’t?
I know there are plenty of people who don’t like Meredith and never have but dear gods, even at her worst she was never this bad. She has become a terrible person.
I’ll be honest, I’m barely getting through this season. I’m watching it because I need some closure, but I think that after Season 10 — whether it’s the series end or not — I’m done. Cristina will be gone, and so will my main reason for watching it in the first place.
If the show does officially end, I’m happy. It’s time to put the thing out of its misery.
